KB Home in Austin
Entry-level and first move-up, built-to-order · $300K-$550K
The short answer
KB Home builds entry-level and first move-up homes in the Austin metro, roughly $300,000 to $550,000, using a built-to-order model where buyers choose the plan, lot, and finishes rather than buying from standing inventory. They are active in the northern and eastern suburbs. The trade-off is more personalisation than a spec builder at this price, and a longer wait.
I have not personally closed a KB Home transaction. What follows is from touring their communities, reading their contracts, and representing buyers against them in the same submarkets. I would rather say that than imply experience I do not have.

The case for and against KB Home
No builder is right for everyone. Here is how I would frame it for a client.
What they do well
- Built-to-order at an entry-level price, which is unusual — most personalisation at this level is not available at all.
- Energy-efficiency specification is above the entry-level average.
- Transparent option pricing compared to most design centers.
What to watch for
- Built-to-order means waiting, and a long wait at an entry-level budget exposes you to rate movement.
- Because you are choosing finishes, the final price drifts above the advertised base almost by design.
- Incentives are tied to the in-house lender in most cases.
Negotiating with KB Home
Closing-cost credits and rate buydowns through KBHS Home Loans, plus studio allowances.
- Negotiate the studio allowance and the lot premium separately from the base.
- On a build with a long timeline, the rate lock terms are worth more than a small price concession. Ask what extended lock options exist before you sign.

Whose side is the KB Home sales agent on?
The agent in the model home is paid by KB Home and represents KB Home. They can be helpful, knowledgeable and genuinely pleasant, and they still do not work for you. Everything you tell them about your budget, your timeline and how much you love the house is information held by the other side of the negotiation.
On new construction the builder pays my fee in most cases, disclosed in writing before we tour. Register me before your first visit — walking into a sales office alone and signing the guest book can cost you the right to representation at that community entirely.
KB Home, answered
Is KB Home built to order really different? ▾
Yes, and it is the main reason to consider them at this price band. You select the plan, the lot, and the finishes rather than choosing among finished homes. The cost is time and rate exposure: a build that takes months at an entry-level budget means your payment depends on where rates land, so treat the lock terms as part of the price rather than as paperwork.
